Preventative Maintenance
An unloader valve regulates pressure in a pressure washer by diverting water back to the pump inlet or bypass line when the trigger gun is released. Without the unloader, pressure would keep building in the hose & pump with nowhere to go. The unloader lets the pump run safely in bypass, then returns full pressure to the wand when you pull the trigger again.
The unloader valve is one of the hardest-working parts on the machine, which makes it one of the most common to wear out.
Some of these symptoms can also point to a worn pump, clogged nozzle, or a failing check valve. If you aren't sure, our service team can help you diagnose before buying parts.
Pressure & flow rating: the unloader's maximum PSI and GPM must meet or exceed pump output
Inlet, outlet, and bypass port sizes: thread size and type need to match existing plumbing
Valve style: trapped-pressure unloaders are the most common on commercial units. Flow-actuated unloaders are used where the pump needs to unload with minimal pressure spike
Special features: Tamperproof caps for rental fleets/shared equipment, or built in pressure switches for units that shut down the motor in bypass
